Are The Major Requirements?
All ENS majors complete a core curriculum which includes foundations in the basic natural and social sciences. There are seminars and class projects as well. Advanced courses are selected from specified disciplines depending on whether the student has a natural science emphasis a social science emphasis, or an environmental science emphasis. Finally, students must plan and complete an independent research project during their senior year. All courses submitted for the major must have a grade of "C" or better. Students are encouraged to earn degrees in both Environmental Studies and a traditional discipline. Graduate schools and potential employers tell us repeatedly that their best candidates have both the experience of looking at complex issues from several viewpoints, as offered in ENS, and the special skills learned in a narrower focus. The ENS degree requirements are deliberately designed to be conducive to pursuit of another major at the same time. The dual major provides a complementary mix of depth and breadth; postgraduate options are expanded as a consequence. Major requirements change frequently. The requirements that you follow are those on the "major blank" that you submit when you formally declare ENS as your major. Current requirements can be viewed on various major and minor blanks.
