Site 5: Jericho Hill Pictures
Jericho Hill is the last of the 5 collection sites. It is located on the outskirts of Alfred, over-looking the valley. It is both a precipitation collection site as well as a vacuum lysimeter site. Precipitation is collected to test pH, anions (chloride, sulfate, nitrate, nitrite, fluoride, bromide), and cations (potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium). As with all sites, it is usually collected within 48 hours after an event. Lysimeters collect soil moisture, and are pumped (vacuumed) on a weekly to bi-weekly basis. Two lysimeters are located at Jericho; one at a 30cm depth, and the other at a 60cm depth. Samples from the lysimeters are tested for pH, anions (chloride, sulfate, nitrate, nitrite, fluoride, bromide), and cations (potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium).
Frances hard at work at the last precipitation collection site.
Its definitely a process to collect precipitation samples. Above, Frances drains the water into a sample bottle. To the right, notice the dark color of the sample water as a result of it being polluted by animal excrement. To the left, Frances replaces the bottles. Below, Frances examines the pole for any apparent damage.

Frances thinking hard about her sample collecting.
Its time to replace that dirty screen on the precipition collector so the samples to come back so contaminated.

On to the Lab for Analysis

This is what happens when the screen isn't replaced regularly. Birds and other animals like to call the precipitation collector home.
