This graph plots the temperature of the air and center of the compost piles over four months in the fall of 2002. It also helps us answer a question. Will the temperature in the compost piles become high enough to break down biodegradable bags? The bags are supposed to break down in 45 days at temperatures of 120 degrees or more. By looking at the graph, you can see that both the old and new compost piles reached a maximum temperature of 110 F on September 12th. The air temperature that day was only 74 F. Summer time air temperature as Alfred, NY commonly rise above 90 F. Therefore, the temperatures in the compost piles should get above 120 F in the summer and break down the biodegradable bags. However, having the compost pile full of individual bags of compost could have some affect on the temperature. Will the bags decrease or increase the temperature of the compost pile? Come back after the summer and you'll find out... |
