The observatory site is located on Alfred University's campus. It is yet another of the four precipitation collection sites being used in this project. As is the case in the other sites, precipitation is collected to test pH, anions (chloride, sulfate, nitrate, nitrite, fluoride, bromide), and cations (potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium). |

There is also a vacuum lysimeter located at site, one of four sites with lysimeters. Lysimeters collect soil moisture, and are pumped (vacuumed) on a weekly to bi-weekly basis. There is only one lysimeter located at the Observatory; at a 30cm depth. Samples from the lysimeter are tested for pH, anions (chloride, sulfate, nitrate, nitrite, fluoride, bromide), and cations (potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium). | ![]() |

| After collection, the samples are brought back to the lab for testing. Samples are tested for anions using the ion chromatograph and cations using the atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The pH of samples from the wells and streams is tested in the field using a portable pH meter. | |||||||||||||
